November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month!

Did you know that Lung Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide? It is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in South Africa. However, there is hope. The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) aims to educate people about how to live with and control this disease, as well as encourage early screenings to prevent it from progressing.

Understanding Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop in one or both lungs. These cells form tumours that prevent the lungs from functioning normally. There are two types of Lung Cancer: Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). Both men and women can be affected by this disease.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Symptoms of Lung Cancer are usually felt in the chest. If you experience any unusual pain or discomfort in your chest, it is advised to see a doctor for a thorough check-up. Some common symptoms include persistent cough, chest pain, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, and wheezing. If the cancer advances, it can spread to other organs, such as the brain and liver.

How can I get involved this month?

This month, you can help raise awareness about Lung Cancer by sharing information with those you care about through social media. You can also wear a white or pearl ribbon, the colour for Lung Cancer, or donate to lung cancer research.

What is PMB level of care for lung cancer?

“Cancer of the lung, bronchus, pleura, trachea, mediastinum& other respiratory organs – treatable” are included in the Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) conditions under Diagnosis and Treatment Pair (DTP) code 950D.
