Dr Musa Gumede appointed the new Chief Executive and Registrar of the Council for Medical Schemes

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has welcomed the appointment of Dr Musa Gumede as Chief Executive & Registrar, effective from 02 December 2024.

Dr Gumede is currently eThekwini’s Deputy City Manager (Community and Emergency Services), a post he has held since 2020. “Following a rigorous recruitment process, the Council and the Minister of Health, as per section 18 of the Medical Schemes Act were in concurrence on the candidature of Dr Gumede. His experience, contribution and track record in the medical schemes and in the public health environment played an enormous factor in his appointment” said CMS Chairperson, Dr Thandi Mabeba.

Dr Gumede began his career as a general practitioner soon transcending to occupational practice, specialising in medical surveillance, clinical, wellness and HIV management.

During this period, his clientele base included National Ports Authority, Spoornet Northern Cape, Philani Healthcare and Mangosuthu Technikon.

From 2005 until 2009, Dr Gumede was in the employ of Momentum Medical Schemes serving in various capacities, first as Head of Provider Networks and later as Head of Low-Income Market- Health Risk Management.

He is also no stranger to public health service. Between 2017 – 2019, he led the KZN Health Department as Deputy Director General (Specialised Services and Clinical Support) followed by a stint as Acting HOD KZN Health.

Dr Mabeba added that the appointment came at a pivotal time during a phase where key national health priorities took centre stage. “Navigating complex healthcare issues impacting the industry is apex, thus as the Council we lend our full support towards the new CE and Registrar” she said.

The Chairperson also thanked Mr Mfana Maswanganyi who held the fort as Acting Registrar since August 2024.
