CMScript 1 of 2023: Focus on Diabetes Mellitus 2
Diabetes mellitus is a group of illnesses that result in too much glucose circulating in the blood, causing damage to blood vessels, nerves, and organs. It is estimated that there are over 4.2 million adults aged between 20 and 79 years in South Africa with diabetes; this number is expected to go up to over 7,4 million by the year 2045.
Diabetes type 2 is included in the Chronic Disease List (CDL) of the Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) regulations, meaning that medical schemes must fund its diagnosis, treatment, and care costs.
These include:
- Consultations with your treating provider
- Lifestyle modification interventions
- Annual eye examination for retinopathy
- Annual comprehensive foot examination
- Pathology/blood tests at 3-6 monthly intervals
- Disease identification card or disc
- Home glucose monitoring – is glucose test strips, a device to read the glucose strips, lancing needles and/or lancing devices.
