CMScript 8 of 2023: Focus on Juvenile Arthritis
Globally, approximately 3 million children and young adults are estimated to suffer from juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). In South Africa, it is estimated that between 19,000 and 75,000 children have JIA. In most cases, they go undiagnosed or receive inadequate treatment. JIA is the most common cause of disability in children.
What causes JIA?
Nobody is certain of the exact cause of JIA. “Idiopathic” means “from an unknown cause.” According to researchers, certain children may have genes that increase their risk of contracting the disease. JIA in these children may be brought on by environmental exposure, such as a virus.
